From Hearing Loss to IIT-Gandhinagar: Ayush Singh’s Remarkable Journey to Aerospace Engineering

A Triumph of Determination Over Disability

Ayush Singh, a 16-year-old student from Patna with congenital hearing loss, has earned a place in Aerospace Engineering at IIT-Gandhinagar after securing a rank in JEE Advanced. His achievement stands out not only because of the academic challenge posed by one of India’s toughest entrance examinations, but also because he reached this milestone while living with a severe hearing condition from birth.

According to his family, Ayush was diagnosed with genetic hearing loss at a young age. He began using hearing aids when he was around three years old, after his parents noticed delays in speech development and difficulty in hearing. Over the years, the family consulted leading ENT specialists and audiologists, and underwent major diagnostic evaluations including MRI and BERA tests. They also explored treatment options in top hospitals, including consultations at AIIMS Delhi, though they eventually decided against cochlear implant surgery.

Academic Excellence Built on Self-Belief

Despite these challenges, Ayush maintained an impressive academic record throughout his school years. He studied for 12 years at St Michael’s High School in Patna, later scored above 90% in his Class 10 examinations, and achieved 92.4% in Class 12 from Delhi Public School. He went on to clear JEE Main and then secured success in JEE Advanced, paving the way for admission to IIT-Gandhinagar.

What makes his accomplishment even more striking is that he achieved much of it through self-study. While he did take one year of online coaching, Ayush did not depend on the kind of long-term formal coaching that many engineering aspirants pursue. Instead, he relied on discipline, persistence, and the ability to learn from mistakes. He said that more than any textbook, it was his errors and daily effort to improve that shaped his preparation.

Looking Beyond the Result

Ayush described seeing his JEE Advanced rank as a deeply happy moment, but he also made it clear that he sees this result as only one step in a much bigger journey. Rather than dwelling on celebration, he says he wants to focus on achieving larger goals in life. His mindset reflects a maturity that goes beyond examination success and highlights a broader sense of ambition.

His interests also extend beyond academics. Ayush has said that he is passionate about motorcycles and, if given the chance, would love to become a MotoGP rider representing India. That aspiration captures an important part of his personality: a refusal to be confined by expectation, whether in education, career, or life.

A Story That Highlights the Need for Inclusion

Ayush’s family hopes his story will inspire other children and parents facing similar circumstances. His father has stressed that India has enormous potential, but that healthcare and educational systems must become more inclusive, with stronger emphasis on early intervention programmes. Specialists agree that severe congenital hearing loss can make speech development, listening, and classroom learning much harder, especially without timely support.

Doctors who assessed Ayush have pointed out that his success is a powerful reminder that disability should never define the limits of opportunity. With medical support, family encouragement, and sustained personal effort, barriers can be reduced significantly. His journey to IIT-Gandhinagar is not only an individual milestone, but also a call to build systems where talent is supported more fairly and fully.
