IICT-Netflix Scholarship Drive Opens New Pathways for India’s Future Storytellers

The Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) and Netflix have unveiled a new scholarship initiative aimed at strengthening India’s next generation of creative professionals. Under the programme, 100 students will receive financial support covering up to 80% of tuition fees across six professional courses, making specialized training in storytelling and digital media more accessible to aspiring talent and working professionals alike.

Scholarships Across Six Industry-Focused Programmes

The initiative spans a mix of long-form and short-form professional training. It includes diploma programmes in Interactive Comics & Sequential Arts and Visual Effects Mastery, along with certificate programmes in Virtual Art Department Content Creation, Media Tech Workflow, Art of Character Animation, and E-Sports & Gaming Management. Together, these offerings reflect the growing demand for skills across animation, visual effects, gaming, comics, and related production technologies.

The scholarships are open to both students and working professionals from across India. This wider eligibility is significant because it extends the opportunity beyond first-time learners to include those already in the workforce who want to upgrade their skills in a fast-changing creative economy. By lowering financial barriers, the IICT and Netflix partnership could help broaden participation in sectors that are increasingly shaping global entertainment.

Part of a Broader Push for India’s Creative Economy

The announcement comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos on August 5, 2026, where India’s storytelling heritage and creative potential were highlighted. At that time, the Netflix India Storytelling Initiative was launched with the goal of investing in the country’s emerging talent pipeline. The broader vision is to equip future creators with industry-relevant capabilities across the AVGC-XR ecosystem, an area widely seen as an important engine of India’s Orange Economy.

Officials associated with the initiative emphasized that India’s creative economy is at a defining moment. As technology changes how stories are imagined, produced, and distributed, institutions such as IICT are being positioned as bridges between raw creative talent and the needs of a globalized media industry. This collaboration with Netflix is therefore not only about funding education, but also about aligning training with real-world expectations and evolving professional standards.

Netflix Input Brings Industry Relevance to the Classroom

A key feature of the programme is curriculum alignment with current industry workflows. IICT said the Visual Effects Mastery and Media Tech Workflow courses have been designed with input from Netflix to reflect contemporary production practices and global standards. That kind of collaboration can be especially valuable in fields where technology, software pipelines, and production methods evolve rapidly.

According to IICT leadership, the partnership is intended to combine structured education, direct industry input, and improved financial access. The expectation is that students will graduate with skills that are immediately relevant to employers in the AVGC-XR sector. Industry representatives have also described the FICCI-IICT-Netflix collaboration as a meaningful step toward building a future-ready workforce for India’s animation, visual effects, gaming, comics, and extended reality industries.

Why This Matters for Students and Professionals

For learners, the scholarship programme represents more than fee support. It signals growing recognition that storytelling today is deeply connected to technology, from virtual production and character animation to gaming management and digital comics. For professionals, it offers a chance to reskill or specialize in areas that are seeing increased demand both in India and internationally.

IICT, established by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting in partnership with the Government of Maharashtra, FICCI, and CII, serves as India’s national centre of excellence for the AVGC-XR sector. Operating currently from the NFDC Complex in Mumbai while developing its permanent campus at Film City, Goregaon, the institute is positioning itself at the centre of India’s expanding creative technology ecosystem. With support from Netflix, this scholarship initiative may become an important model for how education and industry can work together to build a stronger pipeline of Indian storytellers.
